India’s First Woman Teacher Savitribai Phule Death Anniversary

Savitribai Phule: an Indian social reformer, poet, and a powerful voice in the Indian freedom struggle, passed away on March 10, 1897.

Today, March 10, 2024, is the 127th death anniversary of Savitribai Phule, India’s first woman teacher and a pioneer of women’s education in the country.

Remarkable Legacy Savitribai Phule

She was a tireless advocate for women’s emancipation and the Dalit community, inspiring generations of Indians. Let’s delve into some facts about her remarkable legacy:

Birth and Early Life:

  • Savitribai Phule was born on January 3, 1831, in Naigaon village, Maharashtra.
  • At the tender age of nine, she married Jyotirao Phule, who was thirteen years old at the time. Jyotirao was one of the most famous social reformers in Maharashtra.

Pioneering Education for Girls:

  • Known as the country’s first revolutionary feminist, Savitribai learned to read and write.
  • She began teaching girls in Maharwada, Pune after acquiring these skills.
  • In 1848, Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule established India’s first school for girls at Bhide Wada.
  • The curriculum included subjects like mathematics, science, and social studies, influenced by Western education.
  • Despite societal resistance, by 1851, Phule was running 18 schools for children of different castes, with a strength of 150 girls.
  • They also founded two educational trusts: the Native Female School, Pune, and the Society for Promoting the Education of Mahars, Mangs, and others from downtrodden castes.

Recognition and Advocacy:

  • In 1852, the British government acknowledged the Phule family’s significant contributions to education and honored Savitribai by naming her the best teacher.
  • In 1863, Jyotirao and Savitribai initiated Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha, India’s first home for prohibiting infanticide. They assisted pregnant Brahmin widows and rape victims.
  • Savitribai also fought against oppressive social customs, including dowry.

Literary Contributions:

  • Savitribai Phule wrote two books:
    • Kavya Phule in 1854
    • Bavan Kashi Subodh Ratnakar in 1892, both collections of her poems.

Adoption:

  • Savitribai and Jyotirao, having no biological children, adopted a boy named Yashwantrao.
  • Savitribai Phule’s legacy remains one of bravery, determination, and kindness, leaving an indelible mark on India’s history
